How Often Should You Really Be Cleaning Your Home?

Keeping your home clean is important, but how often do you really need to clean everything? Between work, family, and trying to live your life, it’s easy to feel unsure about what needs attention daily, weekly, or just once in a while.

The truth is, not everything has to be done all the time. You don’t need to deep-clean your oven every week, and your windows probably don’t need to sparkle 24/7. But some tasks should happen more often than we think, and others we tend to do too much.

Here’s a simple breakdown of what you should clean and how often, based on how real people live, not a magazine version of life.

Every Day: Quick Resets

You don’t need to spend an hour cleaning every night. But a few five-minute daily tasks will keep your space from falling apart.

  • Wipe down kitchen counters.
  • Do a quick dish check or load the dishwasher.
  • Straighten pillows, blankets, and common areas.
  • Put clutter in one spot (even if it’s a basket to sort later).
  • Quick sweep in high-traffic areas if needed.

These little resets make your weekly cleaning way easier.

Every Week: Keep Things Fresh

Once a week, try to set aside an hour or two to handle the stuff that builds up if you ignore it. Even if you can’t do it all, doing some is better than nothing.

  • Clean bathrooms (toilet, sink, shower)
  • Wipe mirrors
  • Dust surfaces (especially in living spaces and bedrooms)
  • Vacuum and mop floors
  • Take out trash and replace liners
  • Change out towels and bedding

Pick one or two rooms to focus on each week and rotate through the rest over time. It doesn’t have to be all-or-nothing.

Once a Month: Deeper Spots

These things don’t get gross immediately, but they sneak up on you over time.

  • Clean inside the fridge
  • Wipe down cabinet fronts
  • Clean baseboards or vents
  • Wash throw blankets and pillow covers
  • Scrub out the microwave
  • Vacuum under the couch cushions (you’ll probably find snacks)

Monthly tasks are also a great time to check for anything bugging you, but it keeps getting pushed to “later.”

Every Few Months: The Big Stuff

Seasonal deep cleaning keeps your home feeling fresh year-round. Most people forget these jobs until it’s too late.

  • Wash windows (inside and out)
  • Rotate and vacuum mattresses
  • Clean behind/under large furniture and appliances
  • Dust ceiling fans and light fixtures
  • Deep clean carpets or area rugs
  • Organize storage spaces or closets

This is also a great time to book a professional deep clean—especially if you’re short on time or want to hit the reset button.

The goal isn’t to clean your life away—it’s to create a space that feels good. Some weeks you’ll have more time than others, and that’s okay. Do what you can, when you can. And when things start to feel like too much, that’s where we come in.
