Before cleaning, look for a tag on the blinds that includes cleaning instructions. If you don’t have them handy, follow the tips below, which are safe for any blind material.

You can start by using a vacuum cleaner to remove loose dust. Vacuum cleaners have several attachments explicitly designed for small blinds. Use the upholstery tool to brush and vacuum the blinds. Move the brush parallel to the blinds, not against them. If you’re cleaning vertical blinds, wipe downward only.

Follow up with a damp microfiber cloth to remove as much dust as possible. If the blinds are greasy, clean them with soapy water or follow the instructions below to clean metal and vinyl blinds.

How to Clean Metal and Vinyl Blinds

1. Take the blinds down and take them outside.

2. Set them up on your patio.

3. Fill a bucket with soapy water and use a scrub brush to scrub each side of the blinds.

4. Once satisfied, rinse the blinds with a garden hose and dry them with a towel.

5. Lay them out in the sun to remove all moisture.

How to Clean Fabric Blinds

1. Wipe away any stains with an all-purpose cleaner

2. A rubber sponge

Press firmly to clean the blinds. Removing them so as not to bend them on the window frame while cleaning is best. If this does not work, you may need to remove the fabric blinds and take them to the dry cleaner for professional cleaning.

How to Clean Wood Blinds

Never saturate blinds with water. If there is a lot of dust buildup, dip a clean rag in white vinegar and wipe the blinds. Once dry, spray furniture cleaner with lemon oil to restore the blinds’ appearance.

How to Keep Blinds Clean and Reduce Dust

When your blinds are dust-free, keep them that way for longer. This tip can help prevent dust from building up in the future. Forced air from furnaces, air conditioners, and open windows move dust, pet hair, and more around homes with gusto. Changing your furnace filter every three months is recommended, reducing the amount of debris in the air. As you change your filter and notice buildup on the walls of your ducts, it’s probably time to schedule an air duct cleaning.
